RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT - Seeding Propensity and Characteristics of Pathogenic αSyn Assemblies in Formalin-Fixed Human Tissue

In this paper published in Cells, the IMPRiND team CNRS investigated α-synuclein’s (α-syn) seeding activity in tissue from the brain and enteric nervous system. Despite holding their seeding propensity in fixed brain tissues, pathogenic α-syn aggregates significant variations in the characteristics of fibrillar aggregates derived from different regions even within the same individual are reported. This finding suggests that fixation stabilises seeds with an otherwise limited seeding propensity, that yield assemblies with different intrinsic structures. This may suggest the existence of different strains within the brain of individuals suffering from PD.
